Students will be drawing draped and undraped models using charcoal and sanguine (red chalk) on large paper pads, just like the Old Masters used. Students will learn about composition, tonal values, and proportions, and also about philosophical values and stylistic moods that inform the individual artistic expression. Your best drawings may be fixed for framing and display. Explore the use of gesture, contour, volume studies, simplified shapes, general proportions, prevarication and expression to describe and interpret the model. Different materials and approaches will be used in each class. Students of all levels are invited to take this class, and previous drawing experience is helpful. Instructor will provide comment, instruction, and suggestions as requested. Continue to learn the critical difference between "perception" and "observation" and how you can radically improve all of your artistic skills. Specific figure-oriented techniques to be learned include: sight-size measurements, shape recognition and block-in techniques, contour and volume indication, value and tonal progressions. Learning to translate drawing skills into an enjoyable portrait sketch is the objective of this workshop. Part one of the class includes a portrait demonstration where individual techniques are explained.
