Workshops -- Winter/Spring 2008Introduction to Glass FusingSteven SchramekSaturday, January 5 OR Saturday, April 5, 11am to 3pmLevels 1-5Course code 1305In this one-day workshop students create an eight-inch disk to display in a wrought iron stand. This course covers the basics of glass cutting, layering and assembly along with the use of frits, powders, confetti and stringers as final design elements. Students can choose from several designs or design their own piece. By the end of the workshop, pieces will be fired in the kiln and finished work can be picked up in about a week. $30 Materials fee payable to instructor. Students begin by making blown vessels like tumblers, vases, and bowls while continuing to develop a strong foundation for more advanced work. Basic color application will also be introduced. Materials Fee: $25 Introduction to Fused Glass JewelrySteven SchramekSaturday, March 1 OR May 10, 11am to 3pmLevels 1-5Course code 458In this one day workshop students learn how to make beautiful fused glass cabochons that can then be turned into wearable works of art. Learn the basics of cutting, layering and designing, using metal infusions and diachroic glass. Workshop also includes an in-depth discussion on the do's and don'ts of glass fusion and the how-to's of firing in a glass kiln. No prior glass-working experience necessary. Materials Fee: $35 Beginning Glass Bead MakingPatsy MonkSaturday and Sunday, March 8 & 9 OR April 12 & 1310am to 4pm • Levels 1-3Course code 577Students interested in glass beads will have a 2 day workshop using Hot Head torch and Mapp gas. All necessary tools will be loaned for class use. Students will be taught fundamental concepts which include safety, melting and appliying glass to a mandrel, pullin stringers for dots and making round beads. Beads from day 1 will be annealed over night and retunred on the 2nd day. We will discuss how to use these beads. Additional beads will be made on day 2 which will be annealed follwoing the class and arrangements wmade to return them to the students through the facility or by mail. The class will expand the basic knowledge to include wheels, dots and inside-out beads. Beads will not be annealed by the instructor unless the student does not have access to such a kiln. Beads will be returned to students through the facility or by mail. A fiber blanket will be provided by the instructor for class use. Please bring your lunch. Similar to the Introduction to Fused Glass workshop, students will create in this four-hour workshop an 8 1/2" disk which will then be mounted into a beautiful wrought iron stand to be displayed for all the world to see.
