Workshops -- Summer 2008Beginning Glass BeadsPatsy MonkS1: Saturday & Sunday, June 14 & 15, 10am to 4pmS2: Saturday & Sunday, July 26 & 27, 10am to 4pmLevels 1-3Course code 577This 2-day workshop is for anyone interested in creating colorful, unique, glass beads for the first time. Using a Hot Head torch and Mapp gas, you will the fundamental concepts of glass bead fabrication, including safety, melting and applying glass to a mandrel, pulling stringers for dots and making round beads. We'll discuss a variety of fun and interesting ways to use our beads. Beads from Day 1 will anneal overnight and be returned on Day 2. Beads made on Day 2 will anneal following the workshop and be returned to students through the Arts Center or by mail. Materials: All necessary tools will be loaned for class use. Students must bring at least 1 tank of Mapp gas (available from Lowe's, Home Depot or Wal-Mart; approximately $7-$8). A second tank may be necessary for Day 2. Beads, Buttons and More!Patsy MonkS2: Saturday, August 16, 10am to 5pmLevels 3-5Course code 579Students must be capable of making glass beads using a torch and Mapp gas safely and efficiently. Expand your basic knowledge to include melting and flattening glass rods and then applying dots and stringers to the "pad". You'll use a punty and wire to complete the piece. Glass items will not be annealed by the instructor, unless the student does not have access to such a kiln. Work will be returned to students through the Arts Center or by mail. Materials list available before class Advanced Glass Beads: WheelsPatsy MonkSaturday, August 30, 10am to 4pmLevels 3-5Course code 578Expand your basic knowledge of glass bead making to include wheels, dots and inside-out beads. Students must be capable of safely and efficiently making glass beads using a torch and Mapp gas. Beads will not be annealed by the instructor unless the student does not have access to such a kiln. Beads will be returned to students through the Arts Center or by mail. A fiber blanket will be provided by the instructor for class use. Please bring your lunch for both days.
