Expressive Slab Built Pottery

Learn how to build functional yet inventive forms using clay slabs. Students will explore a breadth of possibilities for form using both soft and stiff slabs to create forms reanging from organic and gestural to clean and architectural. Demonstrations will include ways to create and use paper patterns and textured plaster slab molds. Learn alternate ways of making spouts, lids and handles. Discussions include ideas about how to develop your own expressive form language and surface decoration and different ways to conceptualize functional forms. Artist will share a collection of glazed she has developed for rich color and depth of surface.

Margaret Bohls is a ceramic artist who lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She makes hand-built porcelain pottery which she exhibits both locally and nationally. She has been teaching Ceramics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for nine years. After growing up in central Connecticut, Margaret attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence in the late eighties. She received her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from RISD in 1989. She then moved to Montana to become an Artist in Residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena. After two years in Helena, Margaret journeyed south to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to work towards a Masters Degree from Louisiana State University. She received this degree in 1995, and then began her teaching career at Sam Houston State University in east Texas. She has also recently taught ceramics briefly at both Ohio University and Penn State University.

This workshop is designed for both amateur and professional photographers wishing to strengthen their abilities to see and work in color. Through daily shooting assignments, critiques, and discussions, participants acquire techniques to become more sensitive to light and its effects on color, composition, texture, pattern, and design. The main focus will be on investigating color from a personal point of view. In addition to addressing the aesthetics of color photography, Arthur will also lead group and individual critiques. Students will have daily assignments to apply classroom techniques and take advantage of the stunning light and color in the St. Petersburg area. At the end of the week, students will leave the workshop with a more dynamic portfolio, new technical skills, and an enhanced sensitivity to light and color.

Arthur is listed in Who's Who and his awards include gold medals from the New York Art Directors Club, the Art Directors Club of Houston, the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, Photo/Design Magazine and the prestigious Stephen Kelly award for his work on the Nike advertising campaign.
