Beginning and Intermediate Painting

Learn how to mix colors and apply paint using various methods: monochrome underpainting with local color glazing, color blocking and shading, overpainting and direct color application, etc. using acrylics and watercolor. Building on these techniques, expand on the various approaches in larger paintings of more complicated subjects. Advanced painting students may pursue independent study.

Figure Painting

Course code 229

Explore various methods of painting including: color blocking and refinement; direct color application. Learn to use quick color sketches to see the model as light and dark forms and a vehicle for personal expression. Students will work on at least two canvases per class with one model and one pose for the entire 6 weeks. Paint the same form using a variety of techniques. Figure drawing or basic painting experience is a prerequisite.

Emotional Figure Painting

This hands-on course is all about your emotions. After shaking off any pre-existing fears, learn how to paint the human figure with economy and sensitivity. Working from a model and your imagination, you will sharpen your observation skills and enliven your paintings with strong, vibrant colors and that "extra edge". Be inspired to look deep within, visualize your emotions and commit your own unique personality to canvas. This class is oriented to the individual and all levels are welcome.

This class will allow you to explore this most versatile medium. Acrylics are water-based paints that are fast-drying, unlike oils. We will explore a range of techniques, a variety of supports, and even its use in mixed media work.
