Materials List

Beginning & Intermediate Painting

course code 201 & 202

All Art Center students bring drawing paper and a soft pencil 6B or charcoal to the first night of class and we will discuss an abbreviated materials list based on your specific requirements.


The materials list below is for Eckerd College's Program 12 week course for college credit for Experienced Learner (PEL) students only.


  • 5 sheets watercolor paper, approx. 18" x 24" (an inexpensive paper is suggested for beginners, 140lb or heavier unless you are stretching it)
  • 1 block watercolor heavy paper (approx. 9" x 12", 100 to 140lbs)
  • 1 large pad newsprint
  • small sketch pad
  • Sheet(s) of masonite (1/4" or thicker), or wood panel on which to paint (optional)
  • Drawing board
  • 1 pair scissors
  • 1 household sponge
  • Assorted thicknesses of charcoal
  • Spray fixative (optional)
  • Selection of bristle brushes (different sizes and shapes such as flats, rounds, brights, filberts) for acrylic and oil painting
  • 1 round paint brush, approx. 1 to 1 1/2 inch (sable is best for watercolor, squirrel is a less expensive substitute)
  • 1 box watercolors (high quality such as Windsor & Newton)
  • 1 water jar
  • 1 (or more) soft pencil(s) (6B is good)
  • Acrylic paints, a selection of colors* (inexpensive paints are fine for beginners)
  • Palette (such as a sheet of plexi-glass) and/or a six-cup muffin pan
  • Palette knife
  • Painting medium: matte and/or gloss medium
  • Barrier cream for hands (available from hardware and art supply stores
  • Painting rag
  • Plastic wrap to store unused paints
  • Other media students enjoy using, or are curious about working with, such as oil pastels, inks or paint sticks (these are not necessary until last session; we will discuss them in class)
  • Small found objects such as old buttons, scraps of wood and plastic, etc. (not necessary until last session, we will discuss them in class)
  • Collage elements such as old magazines (this may include paintings not deemed successful!)
  • Gel medium (optional)
  • 1 or more stretched canvas(es), approx. 18" x 24"
    • NOTE -- for stretching your own canvas, you will need:
    • canvas
    • stretcher strips
    • heavy duty staple gun (loaded)
    • stretching pliers (optional)
    • corner brackets (optional, depending on size of canvas)
    • fine sandpaper
    • gesso
    • three inch wide nylon gesso brush

*Colors should include: titanium white, cadmium yellow (pale and medium), cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umbre, phthalo green


If you are using oils then you will need odorless turpentine. Also, a small bottle of linseed oil.
