Acrylic Painting

course code 263

Mary Lee Zink

Paints—I do not care what type you use. If you are just getting started and buying them for the first time, Liquitex makes a nice, reasonably priced tube paint. Goldens makes an excellent choice, too; they also make a liquid acrylic that works well with watercolor techniques.

Colors: these should be your choice, but you need minimally,
  • red (there are orangy reds, true reds, pinky reds)
  • orange (this is cadmium red med or light)
  • yellow (also a cadmium,yellow)
  • raw sienna
  • blue (cerulean is sky blue, cobalt is a true blue, thalo blue is a greeny blue)
  • green (a sap green, like tree green, or hookers green which is a bluer green.)
  • titanium white
  • carbon black
  • a purple is nice to have too, but not necessary
  • A beginners set is fine...you can get any of above not in the set separately.
Mediums to mix with paints...I especially like Golden's GAC 100 for use with all types of paint.
Brushes—I like the synthetic white ones made especially for acrylics, and a couple of cheap hogs hair bristle brushes, too. Basic sizes: a 4, 8, and 10. You might like to get a fan brush, too. The larger your canvas or board, the larger the brushes you should buy.
    Something to paint on
  • A canvas paper pad, 9"x12" or smaller
  • Canvas boards or stretched canvas 9"x12" or larger
A palette to put paint out onto...a white board, plexiglass, even a waxed paper plate. There are also ones to purchase...the one I like for storing acrylics is the Masterson palette. Even a large ziplock bag and a sponge can keep a plate of paint viable from week to week.
Container the size of a large yogurt, a squirt bottle, paper towels
