Skin City: the Art of the Tattoo

an image from the show

The art world has seen a recent trend towards "art of the street" — graffiti, hip hop, cartoons, etc., gracing the walls of prestigious museums and galleries all over the world. This exhibition follows that trajectory, attempting to document the synthesis of tattoo art into a thriving art form, noting the influence of tattoo art among contemporary artists and shedding light into the art of working tattoo artists.

Artists include D. Dominick Lombardi, New York City-based curator, whose series of India-ink Post-Apocalyptic tattoos have been exhibited in galleries across the country. Nick Bubash, a Pittsburgh-based artist who has been tattooing professionally since 1972, presents his recent paintings and assemblages, which look like 3-dimensional tattoos. Also featured is Don Ed Hardy, known as "the godfather of modern tattoo" for his sophistication, depth and sense of experimentation. Other artists include renowned tattoo artist Thom deVita, Susan Moore, Susan Jamison, John Wyatt and Steed Taylor. This exhibition will be an interactive, educational experience for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Jennifer Onofrio Fornes

an image from the show

South Carolina artist Jennifer Onofrio Fornes is drawn to subjects of mortality, fragility, and contrasting issues like strength and weakness, beauty and horror. Primarily a photographer, because of the medium's ability to function as a memory trigger, she also incorporates oils and powdered charcoal in order to move her figurative images away from and to transcend the traditional associations of the medium. Jennifer received an MFA in sculpture, photography and drawing from the University of California at Davis, and is currently associate professor of art at Augusta State University in Georgia. She is represented by Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO.

Luis Jimenez: Prints

an image from the show

Born in El Paso, TX to an immigrant father and American mother, the late, internationally-recognized sculptor Luis Jimenez celebrated Hispanics and the working man and woman in his art. His most famous work, Vaquero, stands at the entrance to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He was also a gifted printmaker, and his prints reflect the spirit of his colorful, large-scale fiberglass sculptures.
