Georgia Artist Donte K Hayes Examines Media Imagery and Stereotypes through Interactive "Gingerblack Man" Installation

Where: The Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., St. Pete, FL 33701

When: Saturday, Dec. 10th

Time: 7 - 8 pm

Cost: Free and Open to the Public

Nationally known artist Donte K Hayes will present a lecture on his interactive piece entitled "Creata-black Man" currently on exhibit as part of the Arts Center's Project Creo "Communication" installation.

Hayes' installation incorporates a life-sized "Gingerblack Man" paper doll that viewers adorn with accoutrements of black life perpetuated by media and pop culture imagery. Gingerblack Man is an anti-racist hybrid culled from two children's stories -- a provocative blend of the seemingly benign Gingerbread Man and the racist history of "Sambo".

As viewers change the clothing, accessories and facial expressions of the life-sized doll, Hayes renders them complicit in recreating negative imagery, forcing participants to confront their own bias and stereotypes in order to create a setting for honest dialogue.

Hayes, through a provocative and humorous multi-media discussion of his work, will speak on media imagery and the impact that "first impressions" have on subsequent perceptions and attempts at relationship building.

The event is part of St. Petersburg's Gallery Walk and the inaugural exhibition of Project Creo at its new location in the Arts Center facility on Central Ave.
