About Our Current Building
The
Arts Center bought its first building in 1972, renovating and expanding
over the next 24 years to accommodate the growing space needs of the
increasing education and exhibition programming.
The Arts Center purchased the former Lester Brothers' furniture store
in the spring of 1996. In 2000, the completed renovation of our five
buildings with over 35,000 square feet increased our physical space
by almost six times our previous space for expanded exhibition and education
programs.
The
renovated facility includes five beautiful galleries, and thirteen classrooms,
including an instructional darkroom, a digital imaging lab, separate
ceramics building, small metals studio, printmaking studio, and a large,
natural-light filled workshop space. The galleries include the Hough
Gallery, the Synovus/Curtis Family Gallery, the Risser Gallery, the
John Stanley Gallery, the Everett Gallery, and the Progress Energy Gallery.
Continuing
the alliance it began with the Florida Society of Goldsmiths in 1998,
the Center's jewelry and metalworking program has steadily grown in
popularity. In addition, there is a community room, catering kitchen,
library, and administrative suite.
The
Arts Center's location on Central Avenue just nine blocks from Tropicana
Field and six blocks from the waterfront and downtown museums promises
an exciting future, with increased visibility, participation and partnership
opportunities.
